Sam Dover

In case you don’t know, Sam is a Jr. from St. Eds in Ohio. He placed 5th at 132 as a freshman and then moved up one step to 4th this past year as a sophomore. Now he is looking for that state title in his 3rd year. He is also a consensus top 20 at his weight nationally and my #47 overall recruit in 2019. Needless to say, he is one of the best in Ohio wrestling for one of the most storied programs in America.

I got the chance to talk to him as he was on his way home from an unofficial visit to the University of Illinois, who is coached by the St. Ed alum and legend Jim Heffernan. His impression of the visit was “it was pretty cool. They are working on getting better facilities but I was impressed with the wrestling as well as the academics.” Though one downside that he noticed was the fact that Illinois doesn’t have a lot around it.

He has also been on an unofficial visit to Michigan, another connection exists with alum Domenic Abounader, and of which he said, “I loved Michigan. Loved the academics, the area, and the wrestling.”  While not quite sure what he wants to get a degree in it will play a big role in his decision.

Other schools that have been in contact with him are Iowa State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, and Pitt. Next weekend he is planning on taking an unofficial visit to Pitt, where St. Eds alum LJ Bentley is a Jr. Asked what he is looking forward to on his visit “I am looking for the same thing on a visit to every college. Somewhere I can become the best version of myself as a person and a wrestler and achieve all my goals as well.” Those goals are “getting a degree in something I enjoy and becoming an NCAA AA and champ. “

I asked him about the St. Eds connections to the schools and whether that is a factor in both the schools he has shown interest in and where he may decide to go to school, “I’ve seen guys go from St. Eds to these schools and be very successful so that definitely plays a large role.”

Sam’s final comments were about his decision timeline “I will make my decision whenever I feel like I’m ready and when I’ve found the right college for myself.”

We will continue to follow Sam as he navigates the recruiting process. Stayed tuned next week when we will have an update after his visit to Pitt.
