ReRanking 2013 – Recruiting Classes

It’s always fun to look back and compare what we thought to what actually happened. Nothing is more fun than looking back at old recruiting classes and see how far off we actually were.

We are going to look at where teams were ranked in the 2013 class, and then compare it to how their classes ended up.

Why 2013?

  1. It’s the first year we have full recruiting rankings from multiple sites so we can get a better ranking system.
  2. It’s the most recent class where everyone still wrestling at the D1 level has exhausted their eligibility. There are a few still using eligibility at the D2, D3, and NAIA divisions.

Why D1?

  1. It’s where 90%+ of the seasons were wrestled. There just isn’t the data to be able to look at other divisions based on recruiting ranks.

Methodology – The only thing we care about is points scored at NCAAs. Why? It’s where team titles are determined and it’s where everything matters. It doesn’t matter if you were the undefeated #1 seed at the national tournament and then went 0-2. You still scored 0 points towards a team placement. You didn’t help your team place higher at the national tournament.

For teams, we added up all the points scored by wrestlers from the particular class.

Note: PinFall Recruiting didn’t exist back in 2013, so we have recreated the rankings using the same methodology we currently use for our rankings. Had we existed back then; these would’ve been the rankings we would have.

We previously looked at how the class of 13’ was ranked and how they finished. Today we will take a side-by-side look at the way the recruiting classes were ranked and how they finished. We’ll have some analysis in another article coming up.
